It has been a few weeks since I have shared a Pooh Pooh story… and this is one of my favorites.
Pooh Pooh and her twin had very short hair and dark skin. They were very plain and very poor. And although I think they are beautiful, they seemed very much the forgotten wallflower.
When they were young (probably preteens or younger), a Holiness minister and his family moved in down the street. He had two daughters about my Pooh Pooh’s age. They were fair-skinned with big blue eyes. Their hair was blond and had been allowed to grow into beautiful, long locks. They were everything my Pooh Pooh and her twin were not. And if you have caught on to my Pooh Pooh’s personality at all, this did not bode well with her. She was extremely jealous.
The minister and his family would often walk past Pooh Pooh’s house on their way to church services or meetings. One day my “Mama Free” , my great-grandmother, invited the family in for a glass of lemonade. The daughters came over as well and went out to the backyard to play with Pooh Pooh and her sister.
I am not sure which twin came up with the idea, but it was suggested that the Holiness girls join them in playing beauty shop. They had such long, beautiful yellow hair… who wouldn’t want to play? The girls sat in front of the twins and allowed them to play with their beautiful hair. They brushed and combed. They twisted and twirled. And they cut.
Oh yes, you read that right. THEY CUT THEIR HAIR CLEAN OFF!! Jealousy was too much for these twins with the dark, short, shapeless hair. They could not take it any more! They cut the girls beautiful long locks off!
Pooh Pooh doesn’t tell what happened after that– except to laugh and say the family never returned to visit and the girls never played together again.
You see the rich history I come from? Ha! My Pooh Pooh is such a character! I don’t know whether to laugh, cry, or issue a restraining order!
